King brings Cowdenbeath’s unbeaten run to an end

Brechin City hosted league leaders Cowdenbeath on the back of a six-game winless run.

The Blue Brazil ventured to Glebe Park having recorded five recent wins, but they were brought back down to earth as Brechin won 1-0.

Midfielder Charlie King was the match-winner nine minutes into the second half when he picked up a pass from Gary Fusco and ignored appeals for offside to shoot home and make manager Jim Weir a happy man.

Weir said: “This league is extremely tough and, hopefully, this win will be the start of a run that can see us move up the table. I feel it was a deserved success and it sets us up nicely for our derby with Forfar next weekend.”

Visiting manager Colin Cameron said: “Brechin were in a false position in the table, and I knew that this would be a really tough game. Unfortunately, we simply did not play well enough to take anything.”

Arbroath drew level on points with the Blue Brazil by defeating visitors Stenhousemuir 1-0 at Gayfield thanks to a late penalty from Steven Doris.

It looked like neither side would break the deadlock as chances went unconverted. However, goalkeeper Chris McCluskey hauled Doris down as they chased a Josh Falkingham pass six minutes from time, and the Red Lichties were awarded a spot kick.

After McCluskey had been red-carded and replaced by Alastair Brown, Doris drilled the ball home.

East Fife struck twice in the last ten minutes through Craig Johnstone and Bobby Linn to secure a 3-1 win at Airdrie United.

Diamond Jamie Stevenson had a penalty saved by Mark Ridgers before Ryan Wallace gave the visitors a first-half lead. Ryan Donnelly restored parity with 19 minutes left. However, the dismissal of the home side’s Paul Lovering 10 minutes later for a poor challenge on Bobby Linn turned the game in the Fifers’ favour.

From the resultant free-kick, substitute Stevie Hislop set up Johnstone to net, and Linn added a fine solo goal to seal the win.

Dumbarton’s Scott Agnew crashed the ball home from 20 yards with seven minutes left to defeat hosts Stirling Albion 1-0 and continue his side’s move up the table. However, Forfar are travelling in the opposite direction after going down 2-0 to visitors Albion Rovers.

Robert Love struck in first-half injury time and then added a second 13 minutes into the second half to make it two wins out of two for the bottom side.
