Kilmarnock want Lee McCulloch as assistant manager

FORMER Rangers captain Lee McCulloch could become assistant manager at Kilmarnock after talks took place between the player and Rugby Park boss Gary Locke, according to reports.

Locke is still to name a number two after being promoted from the assistant’s role following the departure of Allan Johnston in February last season.

It’s believed he initially wanted Hibernian goalkeeping coach Alan Combe for the job, having worked with him at Hearts, but former Kilmarnock stopper decided to stay at Easter Road.

According to The Scottish Sun, Locke has now turned his attention to McCulloch. The 37-year old is thought to be looking for a club after Rangers chairman Dave King insisted no out of contract players would be offered a new deal at Ibrox.

The former Scotland international is said to be keen on a route into coaching and has spent time over the last few seasons doing his coaching badges.

Whether McCulloch will wish to take the role as a player-coach remains to be seen. Despite his advancing years he still chalked up 46 appearances last term and could, at the very least, add competition for places in the Rugby Park dressing room.

Meanwhile, Kris Boyd remains top of Locke’s wish-list for potential signings this summer.

Like McCulloch, Boyd is also a free agent after a disastrous year at Ibrox. Prior to the 2014/15 season he netted 22 goals for Kilmarnock the previous campaign, and Locke is betting that he can recapture his previous form in Ayrshire.
