Kaunas no go for disgraced Hearts star Thomson

Craig THOMSON is unlikely to continue his footballing career in Lithuania or Belarus after leaving Hearts, the Evening News can reveal.

Suggestions of a loan move to FBK Kaunas or FC Partizan Minsk have arisen following Hearts' statement on Sunday that Thomson would be exiting Tynecastle. Both clubs are financed by Vladimir Romanov's Ukio Bankas Investment Group but are not expected to offer Thomson a lifeline. The Tynecastle hierarchy have been advised to clarify the issue after admitting in the statement that he would be leaving Hearts.

They have not stated the terms of his departure and senior officials today refused to comment publicly on the matter.

Thomson admitted to lewd, libidinous and indecent behaviour and was placed on the sex offenders' register last month. Hearts initially backed the 20-year-old but further allegations led Romanov to conclude that he could not continue to represent the club. His immediate future remains unclear.

Officials at UBIG are not expecting Thomson to move within their triumvirate of clubs but the player is keen to continue his playing career if possible.

Jim Jefferies, the Hearts manager, believes Thomson's career in Scotland is over. "It has made it impossible for him to continue in this country. All the signs are he wants to stay in football, but it will have to be done elsewhere," he said. "The boy has paid for being very silly, but he's brought this on himself."

Hearts' Spanish winger Suso Santana has informed the club that would like to leave to be closer to his family in Tenerife. However, he will not be allowed to depart without a transfer fee as his contract still has 12 months remaining. He said: "It's not for sporting reasons I want to return, it's family reasons. I've told the coach and he has accepted it. I've adapted but my family hasn't."
