Josh Magennis signs new deal at Dons

Northern Ireland international Josh Magennis has signed a one-year contract extension at Aberdeen.

The versatile 21-year-old, who began his career as a goalkeeper, has made more than 60 appearances, scoring five goals, since moving to Pittodrie in 2010. A statement on the club’s official website read: “Aberdeen’s Josh Magennis has signed a new deal to keep him at Pittodrie for the next 12 months. The 21-year-old, who joined from Cardiff City as a striker two years ago, has played at right-back in recent matches, a position manager Craig Brown believes could end up being his preferred one.”

Meanwhile, Darren Mackie is set to captain Aberdeen in his farewell appearance tomorrow before leaving the Dons at the end of his current contract. The Pittodrie fixture with St Mirren will be his final match.

The 30-year-old said: “This is my 13th full season at the club so it has been a long time and a huge part of my life. I have loved pretty much every minute. There have been big highs and lows, but it’s been a great time. I love the club and I’m still a supporter at heart so it will be sad to leave.

“I wish the club all the best for the future and I hope they can get back to the very top.”

Mackie has yet to make a decision on his future, adding: “I just need to find somewhere else to play my football. I have not spoken to anyone other than my agent. I will need to sit down over the coming weeks and see what is out there and discuss it with the family as well.”
