Joe Lewis sets sights on trophies after extending Aberdeen stay

Aberdeen goalkeeper Joe Lewis has targeted trophies after penning a contract extension which will keep him at Pittodrie until the summer of 2020.

The 29-year-old has proved a hit since moving north on a free transfer from Cardiff City last summer. He played every minute for the Dons during the previous campaign, widely regarded as one of the signings of the season in Scotland.

The Englishman was named both the SPFL team of the Year and the PFA Team of the Year, producing arguably the save of the season against Celtic.

He told the club’s website: “I’m thoroughly enjoying my time here and it was an easy decision to make to stay longer. My family love it here and have settled in really well and from my perspective, I want to win trophies here after coming so close last season. The opportunity to play in Europe regularly is another bonus and one that cannot be underestimated.”

The news follows on from Derek McInnes choosing to stay at PittodrIe instead of moving to Sunderland.

McInnes said: “We’ll be making signings over the next period but there’ll be no better news than Joe signing on for an extra two years. He’s been magnificent from day one here and he’s a big hit with the fans. Joe is an integral part of what we want to do here and I’m absolutely delighted he’s staying.”
