Lewis, the Aberdeen captain, is so usually reliable in between the sticks, but a fairly routine 88th-minute shot from Jamie McGrath squirmed through him and into the net to give the Buddies a 2-1 win.

Jim Goodwin’s men had taken the lead after just four minutes thanks to a free-kick from Ilkay Durmus in Paisley, but Niall McGinn equalised for Aberdeen just before the break.

The tie looked destined for extra time under Lewis’ aberration, with St Mirren building on last weekend’s 1-0 Premiership win away at Livingston.
