Bennett has been on the Inverness board for 12 years, but is set to move on despite being an influential figure at the Highlands club.

He was instrumental in making several appointments over the years, bringing in former Hearts legend John Robertson as manager over 10 years ago, and appointing Craig Brewster in 2004. He was also key to bringing Terry Butcher to Inverness four years ago.

Bennett is believed to be dissatisfied at an increasingly marginal role at the club, with Butcher having a hand in many decisions Bennett was formerly in charge of. Since Butcher’s departure to Hibernian, it is believed that Bennett is also dissatisfied with his peripheral role in the search for a new manager.

The 48-year-old said: “I’m leaving the club on good terms but my decision has been prompted by growing reservations about the boardroom mix and the influence that is having.

“As the club moves into a new era under a new manager - and in its highest-ever league position - I want to with it all the best.”
