Scottish football could be set for extended transfer window as SPFL seek Uefa clarity

Scottish clubs could benefit from an extended transfer window once the coronavirus pandmeic passes and a semblance of normality resumes.

According to reports in England, clubs down south in the English Football League and the Premier League keen for some movement on the summer window.

Fifa confirmed to the Mirror that such an idea is being assessed, as well as the issue of players contracts with many of those out of contract in Scotland seeing their deals expire at the end of May, while in England it is largely the end of June.

One possible option is extending the transfer window through to January.

A FIFA spokesperson said: “On 18 March the Bureau of the FIFA Council decided to establish a FIFA-Confederations Working Group in response to COVID-19.

“This Working Group will assess the need for amendments or temporary dispensations to the FIFA Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players’ to protect contracts for both players and clubs and adjusting player registration periods.”

There is every likelihood Scottish clubs would take the lead of their peers in England, while the Daily Record report that the SPFL have sought clarity on what happens next with the leagues.

Around Europe many divisions have been put on hold until April 30 at the earliest, while Uefa have postponed the Champions League and Europa League indefinitely.

The governing body are now under pressure to provide guidance as to what happens next, both in terms of league winners and those team who qualify for European football next season.

The Record report that the qualifying rounds may be condensed for next season’s tournaments.
