Scots manager David Moyes becomes a fruit and veg driver

West Ham United manager David Moyes has been delivering fruit and vegetables to elderly residents in his village during football’s lockdown amid the coronavirus outbreak.

The former Everton, Manchester United, Real Sociedad and Sunderland boss says he saw a sign in the window of a local shop asking for volunteers to be delivery drivers.

Moyes answered the call and said: “All I was doing was dropping [the packages] at the door, knocking and then going away. It was beautiful big boxes of fruit and veg, really colourful. I was enjoying it, going back to the shop to get another lot and then filling the car up.

“Two of my pals who I go out for drinks with now and again were giving me dog’s abuse and WhatsApping me saying: ‘Have you delivered your fruit and veg yet?’ I ended up having to deliver two big boxes to my pals.”

He also had to ask some residents for payment if they hadn’t done so online. Moyes says one incident “with this particular older lady, I think it was £16.80 for one box of fruit and veg. She gave me a 20-pound note and said, ‘Here son, just keep the change’.”

Moyes, 56, was at a loose end when he saw the appeal for volunteer drivers.

“There was a thing up in the window that said drivers needed,” he explained. “I volunteered to do it as my wife was away at the time and I was on my own. So I became a fruit and veg driver.”

The English Premier League has been suspended since 13 March. That was the day after Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta tested positive for the virus.

Moyes had to self-isolate after that because he had come into close contact with Arteta days earlier.
