Ryan Fraser – a stand-out performer for the national side during last month’s triple-header of internationals at Hampden – missed Newcastle’s trip to Southampton tonight through injury.

The winger is understood to have a hamstring problem that rules him out of tonight’s English Premier League match at St Mary’s, and leaves him on the verge of withdrawal from the Scotland squad for next week’s crucial clash in Belgrade, and the subsequent UEFA Nations League matches in Slovakia and Israel.

Fraser hit the winner in Scotland’s last match – a 1-0 success over the Czech Republic on October 14 and will be a huge miss if injury forces him out of contention.

Steve Clarke’s side face Serbia on Thursday next week before heading to Trnava a week on Sunday (November 15) and then Netanya on Wednesday, November 18.
