While most were delighted to see the inclusion of in-form Southampton striker Che Adams – “finally a goalscorer” was the overwhelming response – there has also been dismay at the omission of midfielders David Turnbull – arguably Celtic’s best player this season – and Ryan Gauld who has been earning rave reviews for his performances in Portugal.

St Johnstone fans have also reacted with frustration after a number of their cup-winning squad, the likes of Jason Kerr and Shaun Rooney, were also overlooked, while Rangers supporters have questioned the absence of Nathan Patterson, the right-back who impressed on the European stage after standing in for injured James Tavernier.

Here is some of the Twitter reaction to the announcement:

Greg (@GR_Lloyd): No Nathan Patterson, right back is playing the highest level of all available and can’t get in the team?

Luke (@Luke_67): Griffiths over mcburnie would be my only change. Happy with that tbh would maybe have had Turnbull but who do you drop?

Alan Brown (@AlBrown82): You couldn't make it up. @StJohnstone have 3 central defenders who are better than Jack Hendry and on better form than Considine and Gallacher and surely Hanley has proved he can't play at this level. Christ.

Lol. (@boredafceltic7): No Turnbull, Gauld or Forrest (understandable due to injury) is disappointing. Should get Nisbet/Dykes partnering Adams too. Would drop Jack and move McTominay into the DM to see if Hendry can do a job. If not, put Jack back in. Rooney should be there instead of Palmer.

Stewart Johnsen (@stewartjohnsen): Surprised there's not at least one of Kelly, Patterson, Turnbull or Gilmour. Few in there aren't playing well but good to see Adams.

Neil Bilham (@NeilBilham1): Not a bad looking squad. Only one in there that I would remove is Oli McBurnie. He’s done nothing for us. Would rather have seen Patterson in there instead of him. Fingers crossed we start well and continue to boogie!!!

Angus Coutts (@angusmaroon): Would have preferred to see Shankland in here but the most striking thing for me here is how different this is to the old firm XI that was so depressingly common. Pretty cool squad from all over

John Bleasdale (@jbleasdale81): A few surprises in there, notably no Turnbull. Nisbet in given his recent poor form is also a shock. Good to see Burke get dropped, Griffiths also can’t complain I’m afraid

Roddy Wylie (@RodW78): Totally understand loyalty to guys who have done alot to get us to the Euros' but there are a number of players in the squad with little game time since the turn of the year and defence still really unbalanced but good luck regardless!
