This is Scotland’s biggest match to date in their bid to reach successive international tournaments and be one of the European sides competing at Qatar 2022.

Austria are the second-place seeds in Group F and the team Scotland circled as the opponents to knock off if they wanted to give themselves a chance of reaching the play-offs, with Euro 2020 semi-finalists Denmark expected to run away with the group.

A 2-2 draw at Hampden on matchday one was a solid, though slightly underwhelming start, but the opportunity is there to put that right on Tuesday evening if they can get all three points.

Adams is booked in a ridiculous decision by the referee. There was barely anything in a coming together off the ball and the Southampton attacker receives a yellow for much very much.

Baumgartner is given time to have a pop on the left of the penalty area. His curled effort isn’t too far away from the back post.

Austria almost through on the counter but Hendry is able to block Arnautovic’s shot and then again when the striker follows up with an effort of his own.

Chance for Scotland! McGinn gets to the byline and sends in a cross for Dykes. He gets his header on target but the goalkeeper is equal to it.

Austria are exerting some heavy early pressure as Hanley’s weak header is fired back from Arnautovic, who narrowly misses the goal from outside the area.

Early chance for Alaba but his shot is blocked by Hanley.

The match is underway in Austria.

Under the circumstances, and with Steve Clarke unlikely to change the formation, that’s probably the best team that could be put out. Gilmour and McGregor will look to dictate the possession, or at least relieve the pressure when Scotland get on it, while McGinn will push forward to support the attackers.

Gordon; Hendry, Hanley, Tierney; O’Donnelly, McGinn, Gilmour, McGregor, Robertson; Adams, Dykes.

Subs: Kelly, Clark, Christie, McKenna, Gallagher, Cooper, Ferguson, Turnbull, Nisbet, McGinn.

Scotland take on Austria in a match that will be huge in deciding whether Steve Clarke’s side have a chance at earning a shot at qualification for the 2018 World Cup in Qatar. The visitors come into the game off the back of a pair of underwhelming performances in the 2-0 loss to Denmark and 1-0 victory over minnows Moldova, though both of those results were preferable to the 5-2 defeat the hosts suffered in Israel at the weekend. It promises to be a gripping night in Vienna.
