Injury-hit Scotland facing another major concern as Saturday setback puts Nations League call-up in doubt

Steve Clarke already missing several stars

Norwich City goalkeeper Angus Gunn has emerged as a major Scotland injury doubt after picking up a knock in his side's 4-0 win over Hull in the Championship.

Gunn, who has established himself as Scotland’s number one over the past year, was injured during the closing stages of the first half at Carrow Road and did not appear after the interval, with understudy George Long taking his place.

Scotland head coach Steve Clarke is already missing several players for the Nations League double-header against Croatia and Portugal next week with Scott McKenna, Kieran Tierney, John McGinn, Aaron Hickey, Nathan Patterson, Lewis Ferguson, Tommy Conway, Jack Hendry and Ross McCrorie all injured or making their way back to fitness.

Norwich head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup admitted Gunn will be a doubt for Scotland.

“Angus jumped to take the ball and took a knock in the ribs,” said Norwich manager Johannes Hoff Thorup. “He was in some discomfort and was unable to come out for the second half.

“It’s too early to say if he will be able to go away with Scotland – we’ll know more once he has had a scan.”

Should Gunn be forced to withdraw it could open the door for Craig Gordon to add to his 75 caps following his recall to the Scotland squad after winning his place back at Hearts this season. Dundee’s uncapped Jon McCracken is the other goalkeeper called up.

Speaking at his squad unveiling earlier this week, head coach Clarke admitted it is a "testing time" for Scotland due to injuries as he awarded first call ups to Aberdeen right-back Nicky Devlin, Preston centre-back Liam Lindsay and West Ham midfielder Andy Irving.

"It's a testing time for me and a testing time for the squad," Clarke said. "The injuries are there for everyone to see and you can talk about them all day.

"But for me it's better to talk about the ones who are going to play and have the chance to play and kickstart their international career."

Scotland face Croatia in Zagreb on October 12 before Portugal visit Hampden three days later.
