Inch sharp shooters to the four

INCH COLTS upset South East Region under-14 Division 2 rivals Craigroyston to claim the David Innes Cup with a 4-0 win at Paties Road.

Inch went into the showpiece final trailing their top-of-the-table adversaries, but racked up a comprehensive win to take the cup and, two days later, secured another victory over the same side to leapfrog 'Royston into first place in the table.

The first half was a scrappy affair and was lit up by one moment of brilliance when, after 25 minutes, Brandon Cameron timed his run perfectly to latch on to a long through-ball and finish past Andrew Brown with minimum fuss.

Craigroyston, meanwhile, went close midway through the first half, as Ben Lamb's free-kick forced a save from John McDaid and, minutes later, Jon Bertram's inviting cross went begging amid a scarcity of white shirts in the Inch penalty area.

The second half started brighter as Inch scored only minutes after the restart in what was a cruel blow for the Craigroyston team. The green boots of Barry Hogg made sweet contact with the ball to guide it over the keeper and into the goal.

Despite the early setback in the second half, Craigroyston battled back in attacking fashion and created chances, with the ball only just looped over the Inch crossbar from Bertram's header.

But, it was Inch who showed more finesse in front of goal, and added to their lead with a third goal. Ryan Watson's effort found its way into the net after some off the crossbar and it was goal that gave Inch a comfortable lead with 15 minutes to spare.

Five minutes later, the fourth flew in and it was all over for Craigroyston. Aaron Mitchell hit a speculative shot from 25 yards and it found its way past the keeper's left-hand side, the long-range drive a high-quality way to seal victory.

Craigroyston coach Derek was very honest in his analysis, admitting that "the better team won in the end."

Meanwhile, his Inch Colts counterpart, Kenny Barclay, said: "Craigroyston are a good, strong, physical team, but if we play good football like we did today, we can beat anybody."
