Hutchie to the four as they get league bid off to a flyer

This match represented the first opportunity for the players at this level since making the step up from seven-aside  competition, and both sides fared well on the bigger pitch.

Hutchie coach Norrie Lewis was content with the victory, but felt the majority of his squad failed to reach the high standards that have been set.

He said: “I’m pleased with the result, but it’s the performance that matters. There were about three or four who played to their potential, but the rest have still got a lot of work to do. But I’m happy with the score.”

The deadlock was broken on the ten minute mark. Midfielder Jack Temple spotted the run of Euan Henderson and played a neat pass through to the No. 14, who took his time in knocking the ball beyond Spartans goalkeeper Mitchell Haddow with the aid of a slight deflection.

Just as it appeared Spartans were beginning to find their rhythm, Hutchie delivered a sucker punch by adding a  second strike. Ben Swan picked up a loose ball just inside his opponent’s half and drove at the Spartans rearguard,  evading the attention of a few tackles before coolly slotting past  Haddow.

Hutchie added another to their tally three minutes before the break. Henderson again used his pace to stretch the Spartans defence and his shot from the left hand side was parried by Haddow into the path of Mac McCloy who dispatched the ball into the net with ease.

The second half was relatively low-key in comparison to the first, but Swan did add a fourth when he finished off a move from close range to add a bit more glamour to the scoreline.

However, Spartans’ Liam Cooper wasn’t too despondent despite the score line and is optimistic his side can improve in the weeks ahead. He said: “It’s our first game and the first time we’ve played Hutchie. We only had one sub and few of the boys are still on holiday, so I think when we come to play them again, we’ll definitely give them a better game.”
