‘Hovis’ earns his bread and butter

ALAN ‘HOVIS’ BROWN scored a late winner to earn Whitehill Welfare all three points in a 2-1 victory against Edinburgh City at Meadowbank Stadium in the Central Taxis Premier Division.

The win has moved the Rosewell club to within six points of leaders Spartans and they have three games in hand over their rivals.

City took the lead after 17 minutes when a Dougie Gair run ended with the ball breaking to Paul Devlin who drilled it behind Ryan McGurk from 16 yards. The lead was short-lived because after City goalkeeper Alan Mackintosh was put under severe pressure by Aaron Somerville the keeper’s clearance hit Somerville and bounced into the net.

With less than five minutes left, a Stevie Manson shot was well blocked by Mackintosh but the rebound fell to Brown who slotted the ball home from ten yards for the winner.

Mike Lawson, the Whitehill manager, said: “With 15 minutes to go we decided to bring on all three substitutes at the same time and it gave us a wee bit of a spark. We thought that we would have a go and it worked for us.”

IN the only other Premier Division fixture, Stirling University, in third place, kept the pressure on both Spartans and Whitehill with a 3-0 win against Gretna 2008.

Edinburgh University, meanwhile, conceded a late goal to lose 1-0 to Cambridge University in the semi-final of the 
British Universities Trophy.
