Hopes high at Hampden for SPFL fan return to stadiums next month

Supporters could return to some football ground as quickly as next week under the Government’s new tiered coronavirus protocols, it has been suggested.

League officials at Hampden have been in talks with Government figures at Holyrood over the new structure, which comes into force next Monday.

That has led to raised hopes that socially distant crowds may be permitted at certain grounds across the country in areas where the virus is less prevalent.

The SPFL Premiership has a four-game fixture card next Friday night and the Daily Record reports hopes are growing that fans will be able to attend games outside the Central Belt.

Aberdeen and St Johnstone are both at home on November 6, as are the more centrally based Livingston and St Mirren though the Buddies have been particularly hard-hit by COVID-19.

The Paisley side have had to cancel their last two scheduled matches due to infections and isolation procedures leaving them without enough players to fulfil fixtures against Motherwell and Hamilton over the past fortnight.

No supporters will be permitted at this weekend’s Scottish Cup semi-finals between Celtic and Aberdeen on Sunday and the Hearts-Hibs Edinburgh derby the day before.

Talks between football officials and the Government are said to have taken place since the five-tier proposal plans were revealed last week and more talks are planned this week.

Aberdeen and Ross County held test events for fans last month but no fans have been allowed to games since.

On Saturday Professor Jason Leitch said: “We may have small crowds in some parts of the country potentially,” but cautioned against expectations of larger attendances.
