The club are resigned to losing the forward at the end of the season when his contract expires.

However, it would take a sizeable offer of around £500,000 for any interested parties to sign him this month.

Hibs have been linked with a swoop for the Premiership star previously, while there has also been speculation regarding Aberdeen and clubs down south.

Stewart, until 2016, was playing junior football before moving to Albion Rovers. After just a year in professional football St Mirren signed the player before joining the Staggies in 2018.

County are currently 10th in the Scottish Premiership, one point above bottom-place Hamilton which means the forward could play a huge role in the club’s top-flight survival.

Speaking ahead of the team’s clash with Rangers this weekend, Hughes said: “It is evident Ross won’t be here next year but I have a real feeling coming from him that he wants to be part of keeping this club in the Premiership.

“I think it would be his way of thanking the club for everything they have done for him over the last few years. He is very grateful for the stage the club has given him.

“He seems quite happy to be here the rest of the season, as would we be. But if a club comes in with a bid of £500,000 then we have a decision to make.”
