Liam Henderson could soon be on the move again with Italian Serie B side Lecce eyeing a permanent deal for the Scot.

The 24-year-old joined Bari in 2018 but moved on to Hellas Verona later that year as a free agent following Bari’s financial collapse.

The former Hibs and Celtic midfielder helped the Venetian side to promotion via the play-offs and has made 35 appearances to date.

He joined Empoli on loan with an option to buy in January, but has now returned to the Stadio Marc'Antonio Bentegodi and is expected to depart on a permanent basis.

Empoli are understood to be keen on bringing the midfielder back to Tuscany but Lecce, who were relegated from Serie A at the end of last season, are currently in pole position to secure the former Scotland Under-21 internationalist’s services ahead of the 2020/21 league season amid reported interest from a host of clubs in Italy’s second tier.

Henderson began his career at Celtic and played 37 times for the Hoops with whom he won the 2014/15 League Cup and 2016/17 Scottish Premiership title.

He also tasted success in Norway during a loan spell with Rosenborg, helping the Trondheim outfit to the Tippeligaen crown and Norwegian Football Cup glory in 2015.

In May 2016 Henderson played a key role as Hibs came from behind to win the Scottish Cup for the first time in 114 years. The on-loan midfielder registered two assists after coming on as a second-half substitute as he made his 48th and final appearance for the Easter Road side.
