Letters to the sports editor: Hibs fans’ superior stance at odds with club’s poor record

IT’S always deeply poignant to read another desperate Hibs fan bleating about Hearts’ player payment policies having enabled them to “cheat” their way to Scottish Cup wins. (B Jacks, 10 December).

However, do these self-appointed guardians of fiscal and moral rectitude really want us to believe that the vast majority of Hibbees would happily support that position? A stance which saw them last win the Scottish Cup when Buffalo Bill was in town? I don’t think so and it’s a sad but true fact that bigger, better supported clubs have
always paid more for players, if not necessarily always wisely. And the current example set by, for example Inverness Caley Thistle, is to be admired.

One minor point, Mr Jacks: if you’re going to write to the papers, at least understand the meaning of words. It’s not possible to have “a current
demise”. You’re either dead or you’re not. Last time I looked, The Scotsman was reporting a victory for Hearts over
Aberdeen.

Probity is all very well, but wouldn’t a trophy be better?

I REFER to the letters of Messrs Jacks and Wilson in last Monday’s Scotsman who write with the benefit of hindsight. Before criticising Hearts’ financial history, they should ask themselves what they would rather have. Either a dodgy financial history, winning the Scottish Cup three times in recent memory and thrashing your nearest rivals 5-1 in the final (not forgetting 4-0 in a recent semi-final), or not winning the cup for over 100 years, flirting with relegation, and such poor attendances that there may be further cuts? Were they making their remarks after the final – I think not!

Fenlon entirely to blame for calamitous substitutions

WHATEVER possessed Paddy Fenlon on Saturday? To take off Leigh Griffiths, the SPL’s highest-scorer, and shortly after the on-fire, two-goal Eoin Doyle was poor decision-making at best and at worst a catastrophic blunder that cost Hibs all three points and their high standing in the league.

The fans in the stands were totally baffled. We thought we had missed an injury or two. The replacements – a kid and a midfielder returning after being off for months – only added
to a congested midfield and when Hibs did get the ball clear there was no-one up front.

I note Paddy claims Hibs were on the receiving end before he made his calamitous decisions. That may be so, but this is one he got disastrously wrong and there is no-one to blame but himself.
