‘The new Carew’ arrives for Rangers trial

Out-of-contract Swedish striker Joe Sise arrived in Glasgow last night and will begin his trial with Rangers this morning. Former Liverpool star Ronnie Rosenthal, who recommended the Under-21 international to the Ibrox club, believes the 6ft 4in targetman is like Norway and West Ham forward John Carew when he was younger. • Rangers are among a host of clubs keeping tabs on Partick Thistle defender Aaron Sinclair. Up to 20 clubs are believed to have sent scouts to watch the 20-year-old play recently. (Herald)

Celtic target Swedish teenager

Celtic have been linked with Swedish youngster Alex Milosevic. The 19-year-old defender, who plays for AIK, is also being tracked by Liverpool, Spurs, Arsenal and Werder Bremen, but sources in Sweden say Celtic could land him for around £1.5million. Milosevic spent a week training with Celtic last January and said he “really enjoyed it”. (Sun)

Calderwood targets ‘big win’

Colin Calderwood believes that a Hibernian victory over Celtic in the League Cup tomorrow would be the biggest boost for the club since he became manager just over a year ago. “We need one real big result, and something like this would in essence be it, because it would take you right into the New Year still challenging in a major competition,” he said. “The reward is bigger than any other game I’ve certainly been involved in.” (Scotsman)

Cook emerges as St Johnstone target

St Johnstone chairman Geoff Brown is closing in on Sligo Rovers manager Paul Cook as the shock successor to Derek McInnes. And Saints are lining-up a deal which allows the 44-year-old to lead Sligo into a 6 November glamour cup final before officially moving to Scotland. It’s understood he has been given a vote of confidence by former Saints manager Derek McInnes and a compensation package has been agreed in principle with the Irish outfit. (Scotsman)

Hearts backroom staff get paid but players still waiting

Hearts’ non-playing staff received their salaries as scheduled yesterday, averting fears that a cash-flow crisis at Tynecastle would worsen. However, last night some senior players were still waiting to learn when they would get the monthly amount they had been due to be given last week. (Scotsman)

Mulgrew hails Celtic spirit

Celtic defender Charlie Mulgrew hopes their recent habit of emerging from tricky situations can kick-start a winning run while answering questions about the team’s mentality. He said: “It gives you more belief to come back when the chips are down a wee bit. Maybe that’s a question that has been asked of us a wee bit this year. The main thing is winning here and we will all be concentrating on that no matter how it comes.” (Scotsman)

McGhee drove me to prayer - Ifil

Jerel Ifil, the former Aberdeen player who was released in January, has spoken out after axed manager Mark McGhee launched a stinging attack on the club. Christian Ifil revealed that he became so sick of life under McGhee that he turned to prayer to keep his sanity: “The last six months or so of McGhee’s spell were desperate... I’m a big Christian man - and faith played a big part in keeping me sane.” (Sun)

Robbo wants Fifers to challenge Killie

East Fife manager John Robertson says his priority is to ensure his men make hosts Kilmarnock work hard for everything at Rugby Park tonight. “I have had them watched a couple of times and have plans in place to stop them hurting us, but we have to play at our very best to progress to a semi-final place,” he said. “We will look to repeat what we have done earlier and you just never know.” (Scotsman)
