Stars of the 80s: No 7, Jim Duffy

Maryhill-born Duffy is perhaps best known these days as Clyde manager and occasional pundit but his best playing days came in 1985 when, while at Morton, he was named Scottish PFA Players’ Player of the Year despite the Cappielow club being relegated.

A childhood friend of Charlie Nicholas, Duffy also began his senior career with Celtic. After failing to stake a claim for the Celtic first team he moved to Morton.

In 1985 Duffy moved to Dundee, only for his career to apparently be ended by injury aged only 28. After a short spell as manager of Falkirk he made a playing comeback at Dens Park before joining Partick Thistle. Duffy then returned to Dundee for a third spell in 1992 as player/assistant manager to Simon Stainrod.

Duffy managed Hibs and was on the coaching staff at Hearts briefly as assistant to Graham Rix. He later had spells managing Norwich, Brechin before joining Clyde.
