Dundee replace Rangers in SPL

Dundee were yesterday invited to join the Scottish Premier League at the expense of Rangers, but there will be talks today over the granting of an SFA-approved licence to the Ibrox club. (Various)

• Rangers chief executive Charles Green is travelling to Zurich in an attempt to negotiate with Uefa a settlement to repay £3million of debts owed to European clubs. Green also believes there has been a change in attitude from the fans towards him and revealed they can ultimately own up to 50 per cent of the club. (Various)

• Green has told staff at Ibrox to expect job cuts as Rangers prepare to slash season ticket prices. (Sun)

Dunfermline were last night considering a legal challenge to the SPL’s decision to replace Rangers with Dundee, but look set to accept they will be playing in the First Division in the coming season. (Various)

• The SPL were last night facing up to a fixtures nightmare, with city rivals Dundee and Dundee United now programmed to be at home on the same day on nine occasions. (Various)

• And the SPL has confirmed that plans to introduce play-offs have been scrapped the decision to place Rangers in the Third Division. SPL chief executive Neil Doncaster’s only promise after yesterday’s agm was that talks on league reconstruction would continue. (Express)

• Dundee chief executive Scott Gardiner has revealed how the club came within 35 minutes of missing the SPL deadline to hand in their application. (Record)

• And Dens Park boss Barry Smith says he will need to sign up to six players to survive in the SPL next season. (Record)

• Maurice Edu, Dorin Goian and Carlos Bocanegra will be allowed to leave Rangers without a legal challenge because Green accepts it would be unreasonable to expect them to play in the Third Division. (Record)

• Former Hearts midfielder Ian Black, who had agreed to sign for Rangers if the transfer embargo was lifted, has said he is willing to play in the Third Division. (Sun)

Regan gets vote of confidence

SFA chief executive Stewart Regan was given a vote of confidence by the governing body’s board last night despite pressure over his failed attempt to ensure Rangers did not drop to the Third Division. A statement read: “The SFA board are wholly committed to Stewart Regan driving the process forward.” (Sun)

Boenisch open to Celtic move

Former Werder Bremen player Sebastian Boenisch says he is open-minded about a move to British football after confirming that his agent has been in touch with Celtic. The Polish full-back said: “I would love to play in Britain, perhaps in a Premier League there.” (Sun)

• Former Celtic full-back Andreas Hinkel believes he was robbed of more silverware because Rangers were spending money they did not have. Fyvie moves from Aberdeen to Wigan

Aberdeen have accepted a reported £500,000 bid from English Premier League club Wigan Athletic for Scotland’s under-19 captain Fraser Fyvie, but various add-ons could boost that significantly. The three-year deal was confirmed last night, with Wigan manager Roberto Martinez saying: “I’m excited because we are signing such a strong character and a great personality at just 19 years of age.” (Scotsman)

Beattie in South Africa trial

Scotland cap Craig Beattie has gone on trial in South Africa with Bidvest Wits after failing to agree a new deal at Hearts this summer. The former Celtic striker began training with the Johannesburg-based club yesterday and is set to spend the week with the top-flight side in the hope of impressing new Spanish head coach Antonio Lopez. Maybury and Kerr miss out on Hibs tour

Hibs manager Pat Fenlon has confirmed that trialist duo Mark Kerr and Alan Maybury will not join up with the Easter Road side in the Netherlands. The pair, both currently free agents, trained with the Edinburgh club last week, but financial uncertainty surrounding SPL clubs is hampering any potential move. (Scotsman)
