Pires signed up for Murray testimonial

HIBERNIAN yesterday snapped up France World Cup winner Robert Pires to play in Ian Murray’s testimonial match this weekend.

The 37-year-old will team up with former France and Arsenal team-mate Patrick Vieira in a fantasy Hibs midfield for Sunday’s game to honour Murray, a boyhood Gunners fan.

Vieira was confirmed for the Easter Road money-spinner last week thanks to his friendship with Hibs cult hero Jimmy Boco, with Pires now agreeing to join his compatriot in the green and white of the home side.

Testimonial committee chairman Graeme Cadger said: “We look forward to welcoming Robert to Easter Road. Ian has been an Arsenal fan since his schoolboy days, a team he chose because their white-sleeved strip was similar to Hibs.”

Hibs’ current line-up will take on a Hibs Legends team in the game, with Middlesbrough midfielder Merouane Zemmama the latest to confirm he will be returning to the club to honour his former team-mate. Scotland striker Steven Fletcher, former manager John Collins, current first-team coach Gareth Evans, fans’ favourite Russell Latapy and ex-Scotland keeper Andy Goram are also among those who will turn out for the Legends team, managed by club icon Pat Stanton.

John Hughes and Danny Lennon will line up alongside the likes of Paul Kane, Mickey Weir and Keith Wright in a Hibs Heroes team that will face a side made up of supporters for a seven-a-side match before the main event, which kicks off at 2pm.
