Neil Lennon’s biggest challenge now is to overcome complacency in his ranks

Having overturned what was once a 15-point lead held by Rangers, now Celtic manager Neil Lennon must overcome the complacency that some predict will be a consequence of his side being handed an extra ten-point cushion.

The task begins at Hibernian today and, for those in the away end, it will be hard to avoid the feeling that they are present at a title coronation – in February. That will be Lennon’s concern as his side take on a Hibs side who have become harder to beat in recent weeks.

“We are fully committed to what we are trying to achieve here,” stressed Lennon. “There will be no slacking off.”

Hibs were the last side to take points from Celtic in the league, when they drew 0-0 at Parkhead in October, but they know the focus will be on how Celtic react to the remarkable news of last week. Nowhere outside Ibrox did Rangers being placed into administration have more impact than at Parkhead. From being involved in a two-horse race, Celtic were transformed into champions-elect.

While complacency might present a danger, so, too, could the sudden intensifying of pressure. Lennon knows his side now have no excuses should they fail to land a first title in four years. “It might galvanise them [Rangers],” said Lennon, although he added that nobody knows what kind of team the Ibrox club will be able to field after the expected cuts to staff.

“We have our record, our run in the league to protect. We have to win it [the title] as early as we can, that’s our focus now.”
