Letter: Ill-informed fans should realise that without Farmer there would be no Hibs

“I don’t know the man but what I hear…” says Jim Taylor of Musselburgh, a “life long Hibs supporter” in his criticism of Sir Tom Farmer in Monday’s Scotsman..

Well, I do know the man and I can tell Jim Taylor and others that had it not been for Sir Tom Farmer there would be no Hibs for him to support as he, and he alone, saved Hibs from being consigned to oblivion by Wallace Mercer. Not only that, he has invested his time and money in creating a club that is the envy of others with its Uefa compliant stadium and state of the art training ground. In addition, if so called supporters such as Jim Taylor took a closer look, he might find the Hibernian Community Foundation located in the South Stand along with the Learning Centre, all driven by Sir Tom for the benefit of the less well off.

Tom Farmer has a real passion for the club. Fickle, ill informed supporters reliant on hearsay should look at the financial state of Rangers and our Edinburgh neighbours. I will back Farmer and Petrie any day. Jim Taylor should get out a bit more and experience the real world instead of relying on hearsay. I have been a “life long” Hibs supporter since 1958, seeing 21 managers come and go. I have seen the set up at Easter Road. I have met Sir Tom Farmer and Rod Petrie along with other board members. “I don’t know Jim Taylor but what I hear…” is mis-informed ignorance of reality and for him to even question Sir Tom’s ambition and passion for the club without having met him beggars belief.

I thought that Jim Taylor’s letter (Monday Sport, 14 November) was one of the best about the state of play at Easter Road that I have read and contained many valid points.

I have been a Hibs supporter for more than half a century and am among what must be a diminishing number who actually remember watching the amazing skills of the Famous Five and their team-mates. So it comes as a huge contrast to see today’s style of play with only one or two strikers.

More and more former supporters are now finding something else to do with their weekends and I confess to being one of them.

Whether a new manager can remedy the situation I know not, but it must be in my system because I know that given the slightest encouragement I will be back down there!

The most striking aspect of the search for Hibs new manager has been the input from those once connected with the capital’s other team. Hardly a day has passed without comments or suggestions from Jim Jefferies, Billy Brown, Peter Houston, John Robertson and Craig Levein. It is almost as if there is some kind of former Hearts managers society, touting themselves or each other.

Let us hope that those making the decision at Easter Road are not swayed by any of this and concentrate solely on doing what is best for the preservation and future of Hibernian FC.

When did Hibs last have a capacity crowd? A long time ago. When will they next have a capacity crowd? Not any time soon, I doubt, yet Hibs are charging £28 for tickets for the forthcoming Rangers match. That compares with £22 for the Kilmarnock match. Concessions will be £17. As the match will be broadcast live, this pricing policy seems bizzare. Little wonder crowds in the SPL are so poor.
