Hibs to unveil striker Danny Haynes as new signing

TERRY Butcher is set to formally complete his first signing as Hibs manager today after agreeing a loan deal with Notts County for transfer-listed striker Danny Haynes.

The former England Under-19 international travelled to Edinburgh with his representative, Mark Bennett, today to pen a loan with the capital club until the end of the season.

Haynes’ arrival in Scotland comes too late for him to be registered with the SFA and SPFL, however - barring any unforeseen complications in negotiations - he is likely to be confirmed as a Hibs player at some point on Thursday afternoon.

The 26-year-old tweeted: “Now on route 2 Scotland. Off on loan 2 Hibs 4 the rest of the season.”

Haynes has scored just four times in 22 appearances during a campaign blighted by injuries and suspensions, leading manager Shaun Derry to make him available for transfer just six months into a two-year contract.

A source close to the player confirmed that the lure of working with former England captain Butcher was a key factor, with a number of English clubs also keen on the speedy attacker. The chance to rediscover his “mojo” outwith England was also described as a pivotal reason.

Haynes has played the majority of his career in the English Championship with Ipswich, Millwall, Bristol City, Barnsley and Charlton, before dropping down to League One to join Notts County last summer.

His signing would add much-needed pace to Hibs’ front line - albeit with a modest recent strike rate of 19 goals in the last three years.

Butcher has made no secret of his desire to secure attacking reinforcements this month. He previously said: “We want players who can score goals. We’re looking at the attacking area because we’re pretty strong defensively.

“Scoring is an area we want to focus on - that can narrow it down for people. I have a little bit of a budget to work to.”

Fitness permitting, Haynes will make his debut for Hibs in the Scottish Cup fifth round tie against Raith Rovers at Easter Road on 15 February.
