The 19-year-old has burst to prominence, making his first start for the club in last month’s defeat by Celtic and retaining his place in the three games since then, scoring two goals.

On Monday the midfielder was named in the Scotland Under-21 squad for the first time for Wednesday’s friendly against Hungary.

Stanton penned a three-year deal in 2012, but Butcher, who has spoken in glowing terms of the teenager’s ability and prospects, has admitted the Easter Road outfit are desperate to get a commitment on a longer agreement.

Butcher said: “He’s very good and if he’s got that ability and that vision now, when he’s only played a handful of games, he’s got a very, very bright future.

“He’s got another year on his contract but we’re trying to tie him down for even more, and make sure he gets more first-team games.”
