Gannon and McStay handed Stockport roles

Former Motherwell manager Jim Gannon has returned to football with Stockport County following the departure of Dietmar Hamann.

The 42-year-old has accepted the position of Director of Football at Edgeley Park, and will be responsible for all football matters including first-team selection and transfers. Gannon’s assistant will be former Celtic reserves and Ross County manager Willie McStay.

Former Dundalk manager Gannon was sacked by Motherwell after just six months in December 2009, with the Lanarkshire club stating he was “not fully committed to the club”. Further spells with Peterborough and Port Vale have proved fleeting, with the latter reign ending after a reported bust-up with assistant Geoff Horsfield.
