Football news in brief: Calderwood favourite for Northampton job

Former Hibernian manager Colin Calderwood could be set for a swift return to management with his former club, having been installed as odds-on favourite for the vacant Northampton Town post.

Calderwood has the most impressive managerial record of any Town manager from the past 25 years, racking up 74 victories in 154 matches during a three-year spell at the Sixfields Stadium and guiding the club to promotion to League One in 2006. However any burgeoning return agreement could be dependant on the successful finalisation of a severance package with Hibs.

The Fifers’ board have stated that they need to bring costs down by at least £100,000 as the club continues to be hamstrung by low home attendances, disappointing season-ticket sales and the increased financial burden of life in the SPL.

Dunfermline insist the closure of the oldest stand at East End Park will substantially save in stewarding and policing costs, as well as maintenance fees which are likely to rise severely in the winter months.

Partick hoping to sign trialist Dargo

Partick Thistle manager Jackie McNamara is set to snap up former St Mirren striker Craig Dargo on a deal until January.

The 33-year-old played as a trialist for the Jags in Tuesday’s reserve loss to Queen of the South and McNamara is looking to sign the experienced player to boost his attacking options.

Dargo, who was released by the Buddies during the summer, recently spent time training with Dundee but could now make his Thistle debut in the Scottish Cup against Culter this weekend. McNamara said: “We are going to take a look at Craig with a view to giving him a deal until January.”

Gattuso in training following eye injury

AC MILAN midfielder Gennaro Gattuso has been cleared to start training with the team after a specialist found a significant improvement in his eye injury.

The ex-Rangers midfielder had been out of action for two months because of a problem with a cranial nerve, which helps control the movement of the eye. “Milan is pleased to announce that Rino Gattuso has been to see Professor Emilio Campos,” the club said. “The doctor has reported notable progress and he has been given the all clear to get back training.”
