Final countdown: Capital heroes No17 - Eddie Turnbull

EDDIE Turnbull, who died last year at the age of 88, will remain a fixture in Hibernian folklore as a member of the Famous Five forward line in the late 1940s and 1950s.

He was the first British player to score in a European club competition in 1955, in a 4-0 away win against Rot-Weiss Essen, of West Germany, won three league titles with the club and played nine times for Scotland.

After Turnbull retired, he became a successful manager, winning the Scottish Cup with Aberdeen in 1970, beating Celtic in the final. He went back to Hibs the following year and his team quickly became known as Turnbull’s Tornadoes, noted for their skill and flair. He brought the League Cup to Easter Road in 1972 before his team thumped Hearts 7-0 in the 1973 New Year’s Derby.
