Final countdown: Capital heroes No 20; Willie Hamilton

ANOTHER member of the cross-capital club, Hamilton played for both Hearts and Hibs, although it was his spell at Easter Road between 1963 and 1965, which came between two stints at Tynecastle, that saw him at his peak under the guidance of Jock Stein.

A forward of unpredictable genius, Hamilton was hampered by an ulcer and a wayward lifestyle. After starting his career at Sheffield United aged 16, he moved to Middlesbrough then Hearts, with whom he won the League Cup in 1962. Stein brought him to Easter Road the following season and Hamilton was man of the match in the famous 2-0 friendly win over the Real Madrid of Puskas and Di Stefano. In 1965, the year of his sole Scotland appearance against Finland, he moved to Aston Villa but was badly hurt in a car crash, from which his career never recovered. He returned to Tynecastle but was a shadow of his former self. After retirement he emigrated with his family to Canada and died of a heart attack while working as a brick layer at the untimely age of 38 in 176.
