Break will do Hibs good, says Towell

Richie TOWELL says the international break will help Hibs regroup and muster the strength to haul themselves off the foot of the SPL.

The Irish defender arrived on loan at Easter Road from Celtic for the second time in a year last week, just in time to feature in the Hibs side beaten 2-0 by Hearts at Tynecastle on Sunday – a result that left his new team propping up the rest of the league.

Hibs next play a week on Sunday, hosting second-bottom Aberdeen with the chance to leapfrog both their opponents and a host of teams above them. Towell sees no reason, given the proximity of teams above Hibs and that the season is barely a month old, to panic just yet.

“We don’t have a game for a fortnight now, so we can look to get it all sorted out and hopefully start to kick on when we start playing again,” said the 20-year-old. “There’s been a lot of changes, a lot of new players have come in and I honestly think the squad looks stronger than it did last season.”

Towell was swiftly followed to Hibs by a second loan signing, Leigh Griffiths from Wolves, ahead of the defeat at Tynecastle. He says that augmenting an already talented side with the likes of Griffiths will allow Hibs to compete far higher up the league in the coming months.

“The position we are in does not reflect the capabilities we have,” he said. “It’s just a matter of working hard on the training ground and I am sure we will soon be shooting back up the table.

“We are all disappointed with the start to the season but, as a group of players, we remain confident that we can start stringing the results together we need to lift ourselves and our fans.”
