Hibs wingback Chris Cadden ruled out for remainder of season with fractured back

Hibs wingback Chris Cadden has been dealt a “devastating blow” with news that he will miss the rest of the season with a hairline fracture of the lower back.

The 24-year-old, who has impressed since joining Hibs in January and had been in the reckoning for a Scotland recall, will now have to watch from the sidelines as his team-mates attempt to seal third place in the Premiership and win the Scottish Cup in the final few games of an already creditable campaign.

But, Jamie Murphy could make a surprise return to the first team squad after resuming training this week.

“Chris Cadden will unfortunately be out for the season,” revealed Hibs boss Jack Ross. “He picked up the injury in training, just before the Stranraer game, and, unfortunately, it’s worse than we anticipated. It’s a blow for him and for us. He is devastated.

“It sounds bad when you say what it is but he will be fine, it will heal and won’t cause him problems but he needs to have a period of rest and, unfortunately, given the number of games we have left, that does mean he will miss the rest of the season which is a devastating blow for him.

“The plus side of things for us is that Jamie Murphy will return to training this week.”

The Easter Road gaffer says Saturday’s crucial league match with St Johnstone will probably come around too soon for the on-loan Rangers attacker but he anticipates the 31-year-old could come into his thinking for next week’s Scottish Cup trip to Hampden, and beyond.

“All being well, he should be back in the squad for the semi-final and with Rangers out of the tournament it means we have no concerns about his involvement if we make it to the final either. That will be a major boost for us because we had thought he would miss the rest of the season as well.”

Jackson Irvine will be okay to feature this weekend, despite a very swollen ear, but Ross will have to wait to see how a couple of others, who picked up knocks in the cup quarter-final defeat of Motherwell last weekend, respond to treatment.

“We are hoping they will also be okay but we will have to wait and see.”
