The anonymous punter, who had correctly predicted 14 other results, including Aston Villa’s surprise away win at Arsenal and Inverness CT’s home win against Motherwell, needed Hibs to beat Dundee United at Easter Road to secure the top prize. However, in a scrappy game, Hibs needed a late equaliser from former United midfielder Scott Robertson to rescue a point, and the failure to beat the Tannadice club led to disaster for the punter.

Some fans of the Easter Road side suggested on a supporters’ forum that the gambler, from Bournemouth, should be invited to a home match by Rod Petrie while others replied that he’d already suffered enough by missing out on the million-pound jackpot.

Coral bookmakers pay out for getting five, ten and 15 predictions correct, with the punter picking up just over £15,000 for his efforts.
