The striker departed Easter Road in the summer to join Swiss Super League outfit St Gallen following a controversial loan move to Ibrox earlier this year.

The 25-year-old appeared as a substitute for his new side in a 3-1 defeat to FC Basel on Sunday, before testing positive for the virus on Monday after displaying symprtoms.

The club confirmed he had been placed into self-isolation and that training had been cancelled for the day.

A St Gallen statement read: "Florian Kamberi tested positive for the corona virus yesterday, Monday.

"The player showed slight symptoms of illness on Monday morning, whereupon FC St.Gallen 1879 immediately initiated a test. This was positive. Florian Kamberi is in isolation and has not had any contact with the team since Sunday evening. He feels well.

"As a safety measure, the training on Monday morning was cancelled as a precaution and the entire first team including staff was also tested. All tests were negative.

"In consultation with the St. Gallen Cantonal Medical Office, the team will resume training tomorrow - as before, strictly adhering to the protection concept of the Swiss Football League.

"Florian Kamberi played on Sunday at the home game of the Raiffeisen Super League against FC Basel 1893; he was substituted on in the 68th minute.

"The Swiss Football League and FC Basel 1893 have been informed of the positive test result. FC St.Gallen 1879 does not provide any further information on this case.”

Kamberi, who has yet to find the net in five appearances for St Gallen, initially joined Hibs on loan from Grasshoppers Zurich in January 2018, scoring nine times in 14 games before making the move permanent that summer.

He went on to score a further 21 goals over the next two seasons, however, his time at Easter Road ended on a sour note following comments he made after making a loan move to Rangers as part of a swap involving Greg Docherty.

Kamberi enthusiastically described the switch as a “dream move” despite having 12 months left on his Hibs contract and only joining the Ibrox side on a loan deal until the end of the season.
