Edinburgh derby win ‘can put Hibs back in race’

Alan Stubbs’ side fell 14 points behind their city neighbours at the weekend as they played out a disappointing stalemate against Dumbarton.

However, McGeouch is refusing to throw in the towel. Hibs travel to Livingston on Saturday and, with Hearts due to visit Easter Road the following Sunday, the playmaker says the next fortnight could see Hibs in the hunt again.

McGeouch: “If we can win that [Hearts] game and go on a run of results then things could turn around quickly. But the most important thing is our next game and getting three points again. The derby will take care of itself, it’s a huge occasion through here. Hopefully we can win against Livingston on Saturday and that will make the game against Hearts even more important and we could close the gap.”

McGeouch has impressed in his five outings for Hibs since arriving on loan from Celtic, albeit he saw red for a rash challenge against Ross County in the League Cup.

Having emerged through the youth ranks at Parkhead, McGeouch is steeped in the intense rivalry with Rangers, and expects the Edinburgh derby to be no different. The 21-year-old said: “I’m really looking forward to it. Derby days are what football’s all about.”

Meanwhile, Hibs head coach Alan Stubbs has not given up on the signing of free agent Paul Quinn. The versatile defender has been offered terms at Easter Road, but has chosen to go on trial with Ross County.

Stubbs said: “We’ve made an offer which he’s contemplating so hopefully we’ll know one way or the other over the next 24 hours what’s happening with him.”
