Second Hearts case of COVID-19 - but no need for further self-isolation in Robbie Neilson's squad

A second Hearts player has been struck down with COVID-19 – but there is no illness knock-on for the squad.

The first team player began to develop signs of coronavirus on Hogmanay – the second case to affect Robbie Neilson’s team inside a week.

However after speaking to football and medical authorities Hearts say there is no need for anyone else from the first-team or the coaching staff to self-isolate.

On Boxing Day, prior to the high-scoring 5-3 win over Ayr United at Tynecastle, the club announced one case had been sourced in the first-team squad, but the match was not in doubt. It is understood the match at Dens Park against Dundee this evening is also unaffected by the news.

A website statement said the first team player’s identity would not be revealed due to medical confidentiality.

It added: “The player began to develop mild symptoms on the 31st December prior to training and, after receiving a positive test result, is now self-isolating for 10 days.

“Professional football has implemented some of the most stringent protocols and we fully adhere to these measures, which are in place to mitigate against the spread of the virus.

“The club has been in dialogue with the Joint Response Group and both parties are satisfied that, having traced the player’s movements and close contacts this week, no other players or members of staff will have to self-isolate.

“Everyone at the Club wishes the player a speedy recovery ahead of their return to training and competitive football.”
