Hearts join Championship call to discuss Hampden ‘hub’ option

National stadium could be used to stage multiple fixtures next season

Hampden could be used as a 'hub' venue to host Championship games.

Scottish Championship clubs have held a meeting via video conference to discuss playing games in ‘hub’ stadiums next season.

Relegated Hearts were involved in the call, even though they still harbour hopes that reconstruction could see them retain their place in the top flight.

The idea of playing multiple games over a weekend at regional ‘hub’ stadiums was debated, with Hampden suggested as a possible venue.

Hubs are part of the Scottish Football Restart project.

It could allow games to be played in front of socially distanced supporters.

The project is the brainchild of the Scottish FA/SPFL Joint Response Group as they look to plot the sport’s way out of the coronavirus crisis.

In a statement issued last week, the Joint Response Group said: “The utilisation of ‘hub’ stadiums across the country with potential to host multiple matches over a weekend, centralise match day resourcing and manage spectator safety was discussed.

“Positives and negatives were noted and it was agreed that each sub group would consider this model as part of their ongoing activity.”
