Hearts, who have today brought in Ross Stewart from Livingston, will receive an undisclosed fee for the 28-year-old who featured 22 times, scoring four goals last season, including one in a 3-1 Edinburgh derby win over Hibs.

Washington praised the Hearts support and expects the club to be back in the Premiership next season.

He told the club's website: “I just wanted to say a massive thank you to Hearts for the amazing support throughout my time here.

“I’m gutted about last year and disappointed neither I nor the team hit anywhere near the heights expected of us. I’ve got full faith in the new manager, and also the squad, that Hearts will be back where they belong very soon.

“It was an honour to play for such a huge club and I’ll never forget playing and scoring in an Edinburgh derby, and the fans in general were incredible even in the circumstances.”

He added: “It’s absolutely brilliant to be here, I’m really looking forward to the challenge. I’ve seen a lot of Charlton over the last few years and with the manager being the way he is, it looks like a great project to be a part of.

“It’s a great stadium, I’ve seen it on the television a few times and I’m really looking forward to playing here. The pitch is nice and big which is good for me, I love running in behind, trying to score goals. Hopefully I can add that in the mix and get us up the league.”

Charlton manager Lee Bowyer said: “We have to bring in bodies and replace bodies that we've lost, so it's a good start.

"He's an international and someone with a lot of experience. We tried to bring him in last summer, but it just didn't work out for us, so I'm really pleased he's signed for us.

"He'll cause teams problems and add that finishing touch that we lacked at the end of last season. I'm delighted to finally have him through the door."
