Hearts: Marian Kello credits club for helping him get Slovakia squad call

MARIAN KELLO has credited Hearts for his promotion to the Slovakian squad for next week's friendly against Luxembourg and stressed that he can become an even better goalkeeper for both club and country.

The 28-year-old will earn his first cap in the Stade Josy Barthel next Wednesday after Vladimir Weiss, Slovakia's national coach, rewarded his sterling performances this season by calling him into his senior squad.

Kello believes he is a more accomplished goalkeeper since joining Hearts two-and-a-half years ago. He arrived in Edinburgh on loan from FBK Kaunas and signed a permanent contract with the club last summer. His goalkeeping displays this season have earned widespread praise.

Asked if playing in Scotland had helped him develop, Kello replied: "Yes, definitely. I'm advancing my career step by step. I feel that I'm getting better. At the same time, I believe that I haven't reached my limits yet and I can get even better. Of course, this depends on my health and luck in the future. I'm glad to be at Hearts."

Kello intends to convince Weiss that he merits a regular international place by replicating his club form in Luxembourg City.

"Actually, I didn't even realise that there was the national team assembly coming up. Of course, I hoped that I would get an invitation this season – whether now or later. I tried to be as good as possible in my club. Under these circumstances, I'm really glad that Mr Weiss summoned me now.

"There are many good goalkeepers in Slovakia and I think that is the reason why I didn't get an invitation. The situation wasn't an easy one for me. I didn't think about getting an invitation even though I hoped to get a chance. I thought that there would be a chance for me if I kept on good job on the football pitch.

"The nomination made me very happy. But I know it doesn't mean anything. I don't want to invent trouble, but this could be my last match – who knows?

"I want to begin with a good start and persuade the coach about my qualities. I believe I can do this."
