Gordon Marshall joins Aberdeen as goalkeeping coach

FORMER Celtic stopper Gordon Marshall has joined Aberdeen as their new goalkeeping coach.

The 51-year old moves from Motherwell where he spent the last four years in the same role and replaces Aberdeen hero Jim Leighton, who left earlier this summer.

Marshall had a long career which included spells with Falkirk, Celtic, Kilmarnock and Motherwell after coming through the Rangers youth system.

He joined Hibs as goalkeeping coach in 2005, keeping the position until July 2009 before going onto similar work with Alloa Athletic and St Johnstone.

Leighton, considered a true club legend in the eyes of the fans, left Aberdeen this summer after spending 27 years at Pittodrie.

He had two spells as a player, including helping the Dons to win the 1983 Cup Winners Cup. He became goalkeeping coach after retiring from the playing side in 2000.

Former teammate Mark McGhee decided Leighton’s services were not required in 2009, though new manager Craig Brown decided to reinstate him the following year.
