Former Motherwell defender Cedric Kipre has been snapped up by English Premier League new-boys West Brom.

The Baggies have paid a fee of around £1million to Wigan Athletic for the 23-year-old, who has spent the past two years at the DW Stadium since moving from Fir Park in the summer of 2018.

The French-born centre-back, who has represented the Ivory Coast at U23 level, was integral part of the Latics backline during the second half of last season that was one of the meanest in the Championship.

But the club’s well-documented cash problems, as a result of being placed into administration, have forced the sale.

Kipre made 77 appearances for Wigan, scoring two goals. He played 49 times in one season at Motherwell and featured in two cup finals.

Motherwell chief executive Alan Burrows tweeted that he was “over the moon” for the player, adding: “A move to the EPL was, in my view, always on the cards such was his potential.

"We are obviously very pleased that another who relaunched his career at Fir Park is now in amongst the big boys. Good luck big man!”
