Former Celtic Football Club manager Jozef Venglos has died aged 84

The ex-Celtic boss, Dr Jozef Venglos, has died at the age of 84, the Scottish Premiership club have announced.

The Slovakian was boss for the Hoops in Glasgow during 1998-99, and was known as the man who brought club legend Lubomir Moravcik to Parkhead.

He also previously managed Aston Villa for the 1990-91 season, making history as the first manager from outside the United Kingdom to take charge of a club in the English top flight.

His career – which consisted of managerial experience both at club and international level stretching over 30 years – also included spells in charge of Czechoslovakia and Slovakia.

Celtic Football Club paid tribute to him over Twitter this evening, tweeting: “Everyone at the club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former #CelticFC manager Jozef Vengloš.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time.

"RIP Dr. Jo, YNWA.”
