Forfar 0 - 4 Aberdeen: Fyvie anxious to repay fans by ending Dons’ 16-year drought

Aberdeen midfielder Fraser Fyvie is desperate to bring some silverware back to Pittodrie to repay the club’s loyal support.

Over 4,000 Dons fans travelled to Tannadice last weekend to see their side come from behind to defeat Dundee United 2-1 and more than 3,000 of the Red Army crammed into Station Park on Saturday to see Craig Brown’s men record a comfortable win over Forfar in the William Hill Scottish Cup.

Fyvie helped the Dons reach two semi-finals last season and is hoping to get to a final this term and reward the club’s long-suffering support, who have not seen their team win a trophy since the League Cup in 1996.

He said: “The fans have been absolutely unbelievable. They made the atmosphere at Tannadice last week incredible and they came down in their numbers to Forfar which we didn’t expect. Obviously when you aren’t winning you can’t expect them to be happy, but we are on a run at the moment and they are turning out in really good numbers, which helps us on the pitch.

“We want to go and win something this season as we haven’t won anything in a while. We got to two semi-finals last season but we want to get our hands on a trophy this season.”

The young midfielder is backing Mohamed Chalali to help get the goals that could take the Dons to a Hampden final after the young Algerian bagged his second goal in consecutive weeks.

Fyvie added: “I think he has taken a few months to adapt to the Scottish game. He was playing in Greece before so it is a different game over here and a bit more physical, but he has adapted to it and is doing well.”

Forfar spurned a couple of chances with the tie still at 0-0, but Aberdeen were rarely troubled thereafter and cruised to the four-goal win. Scott Vernon opened the scoring when he hooked the ball into the net on 31 minutes. Chalali punished a mistake in the Forfar defence and raced clear to double the Dons’ lead before half-time and the game was beyond doubt when New Zealand striker Rory Fallon headed home from close range. Mitchell Megginson came off the bench and added a neat finish to complete the scoring.
