Casillas not yet ready for Real Madrid return

Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas is back in training after injury but lacks the sharpness to make the squad for today’s La Liga game at Real Zaragoza, said assistant coach Aitor Karanka.

The Spain captain broke a finger in January and missed last week’s World Cup qualifiers against Finland and France. “The medical team passed him fit a week ago but he doesn’t have the competitive edge needed to be 100 per cent for games,” said Karanka.

Scotland welcome back Small for Wales clash

DEFENDER Rachael Small returns to the Scotland women’s squad for next Sunday’s friendly against Wales at East End Park after missing the Cyprus Cup due to work commitments.

The sides were in the same Euro 2013 qualifying group, drawing 2-2 at Tynecastle before Scotland won the return in Llanelli 2-1. Also in the squad are Arsenal’s Kim Little and Jenny Beattie, who helped their side to a 4-1 aggregate midweek win over Italians ASD Torres in the Champions League.

Rogers claims football culture is against gays

Former Leeds and United States winger Robbie Rogers claims he could not have continued his career after coming out as gay last month.

He said: “In football it’s impossible to come out. A lot of my friends are footballers and I can’t speak for all of them, but when they get into that football culture they all turn into the same person almost.

“It’s that pack mentality and saying something to make your buddies laugh on the bench or in the locker room.”
