Football roundup: Swiss roll over understrength German side

Switzerland stunned Euro 2012 contenders Germany 5-3 in a friendly in Basel, with Eren Derdiyok grabbing a hat-trick against a makeshift German defence.

The visitors were missing more than half their usual starting line-up, with eight Bayern Munich players still to join the squad.

“We made far too many mistakes,” said Germany coach Joachim Löw, who will announce his final squad this week, after watching his team slump to their biggest defeat by Switzerland since their first clash in 1908 ended in the same result.

The Germans fell behind after 21 minutes through new Hoffenheim signing Derdiyok – who struck again two minutes later.

The Germans upped the pressure and were rewarded just before the break when Mats Hummels headed in a Mesut Ozil free kick and Andre Schuerrle pulled another back for the Germans after Derdiyok headed his third goal in the 50th minute. Switzerland made it 4-2 through Stephan Lichtsteiner before Germany’s Marco Reus hit back, Admir Mehmedi completing the Swiss rout.

Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas is set to miss a big chunk of Spain’s preparations for Euro 2012 after being ruled out for seven to ten days with a hamstring strain.

Fabregas picked up the injury when he came on for the last ten minutes of Barça’s 3-0 King’s Cup final win over Athletic Bilbao on Friday. But the former Arsenal player is likely to be named today in Spain’s final 23-man squad to defend their title in Poland and Ukraine next month.

And Adrian Lopez boosted his chances of a place in Spain’s Euro 2012 squad by scoring on his debut and winning a penalty in the 2-0 win over Serbia.

Lopez, one of five players to make his debut for Spain, scored from a cross by Jesus Navas then went down under a challenge from Dusko Tosic and Santi Cazorla converted the penalty.

Portugal, meanwhile, faced a barrage of whistles from their fans after a disappointing 0-0 home draw against Macedonia.

Holland suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat to Bulgaria in Amsterdam after a last-minute winner from substitute Illiyan Mitsanski.
