FC Stjarnan ‘back Scottish independence’

ICELANDIC football team FC Stjarnan appear to have backed Scottish independence, just days after facing Celtic in the Champions League qualifiers.

The Garðabær-based outfit have joined fellow Icelanders, the band Sigur Rós, in declaring support for Scottish independence, who expressed their backing for the Yes campaign after a gig in Edinburgh in 2013.

Part-time team Stjarnan lost 6-1 on aggregate to Celtic in the Champions League qualifier but appear to have struck up a rapport with Hoops fans, with the club’s Twitter account posting numerous images of Stjarnan and Celtic fans together before the match in Iceland.

And in a tweet, now deleted, the Úrvalsdeild champions tweeted: “Dear BritishMonarchy & @David_Cameron just got to know some great Scottish and most like to be independent. It works in Iceland so way not? [sic]”

Icelandic songstress Björk also urged Scots to vote Yes on the eve of the referendum, posting altered lyrics from her song ‘Declare Independence’, on her Facebook page, adding the words “Scotland! Scotland! Scotland!”.

Stjarnan gained global recognition for their intricate goal celebrations, which have been featured on football shows worldwide.
