Fay positive over World Cup draw

SCOTLAND coach Anna Signeul was handed the opportunity to plot the downfall of her native Sweden when the women’s 2015 World Cup draw was made in Nyon yesterday.

The Scots, who were among the second seeds, are in Group 4, where they will also face Poland, Northern Ireland, Bosnia-Herzegovina and the Faroe Islands. The seven European group winners will qualify for the finals in Canada with an eighth side joining them after play-offs.

Scotland captain Gemma Fay said: “I think this is our best chance to qualify for a major championship finals.

“Sweden are going to be a challenge. They are one of the three strongest sides in Europe but we have beaten Italy and Holland already this season, and drawn with England.

“We beat Northern Ireland and Poland, both away from home, in friendlies last year.”

Signeul said beforehand that she wanted to avoid France and Germany but the Swedes, who finished third at the London Olympics, are formidable opponents. They beat Scotland 4-1 in Kirkcaldy last season.

Scotland will be aiming to, at worst, reach the play-offs for Canada as one of the four best group runners-up.
