Fan wanted to fill mascot's yellow shoes

Bosses at Partick Thistle have announced they are looking for a new team member to step into the bright yellow shoes of their mascot Kingsley.

The successful applicant can expect to rub shoulders with players, celebrities and supporters at the Glasgow club.

The spiky yellow character made headlines across the world and saw the Ladbrokes Premiership team trending on social media after his unveiling in June 2015.

Descriptions of the mascot offered on Twitter ranged, among others, from Lisa Simpson on crack to Freddy Krueger’s half sister.

Now officials at the club, known as the Jags, are seeking someone to step into the suit of the “mono-browed, dentist-deprived ray of sunshine that is Kingsley”, who was designed by 2013 Turner Prize nominee and long-time Partick Thistle fan David Shrigley.

Duties for the successful candidate - who must be between 5ft8in and 6ft2in – would include being the main focus at games, hobnobbing with stars and heading up an army of Jags followers.

Partick Thistle managing director Ian Maxwell said: “We’ve decided to turn to our fans to find our next Kingsley.

“We want to see passion, creative thinking and ideas that are a bit out there, just like the mascot should be.

“We have exciting plans for Kingsley next season that we hope will help keep the momentum around the club moving in the right direction.

“Kingsley is the face of the club and we can’t wait to find the right person to make sure he remains the centre of attention, not only at Partick Thistle but also within Scottish football as a whole.”

Perks include a 2016/17 club season ticket and the chance to travel the country meeting stars such as Baywatch actor David Hasselhoff and Countdown presenter Rachel Riley.

Candidates can apply by submitting a short video, along with a CV and covering letter explaining why they deserve to become the next Kingsley by 11 July. The winner will be unveiled in the run-up to the club’s opening home fixture in the Betfred Cup against Queen of the South on 23 July.

Other club mascots include Broxi Bear at Rangers, Celtic’s Hoopy the Huddle Hound, Sunshine the Leith lynx at Hibs, InverNessie at Inverness Caledonian Thistle, Dundee United’s Terry the Terror, and Jock the Jambo at Hearts.

During his heyday as a player for Rangers, Ally McCoist famously surprised Edinburgh crowds by appearing in the Hearts mascot costume during a local derby match against rivals Hibs in 1996.
